Maharashtra: Elderly Covid patients saved by neighbours in Thane | Thane News – Times of India

THANE: Timely alertness shown by neighbours of a senior citizen who stayed alone in a Ghodbunder road complex flat helped save him from slipping into a critical condition on Friday.
The man had apparently contracted Covid and his oxygen levels had dropped following which he was rendered immobile. The man stayed alone while his daughter stayed in Mumbai. However, neighbours often checked on his well-being but as he failed to respond for a long time since Friday morning, they alerted the municipal authorities.
A civic team broke open the door and found him lying motionless on the bed following which a random test showed him to have tested positive. “Immediately, the team arranged for medical facilities including oxygen for him and later shifted him to a Covid hospital,” informed Santosh Kadam, chief of the Thane regional disaster management cell.
In another case, a woman who was unable to get a bed in a Covid hospital for nearly three days due to some confusion over her Covid registration forced her family to hire an oxygen cylinder at home till a bed was made available after contacting the state health minister’s office.
An ageing visually challenged couple who had also tested positive were given instant accommodation at the Saket Covid hospital in Thane, Friday evening. “The couple had been denied immediate beds elsewhere so we made special arrangements for them,” said a civic official.
Meanwhile, the BJP questioned the preparedness of the municipal administration towards being able to handle the situation and sought to know why beds weren’t being made available and patients asked to wait for long. “There is a 1000 bed facility available but apparent lack of planning has resulted in the facility not yet being operational while hundreds of residents continue to face problems in the city securing a bed for their Covid positive relatives,” complained BJP group leader Manohar Dumbre.
