MUMBAI: Animal rights activists of Cheersfurever Foundation have lodged an FIR against a truck driver who mowed down a dog in Vasai (West) recently.
The activists submitted the CCTV footage of the incident to the Manikpur police station, where the FIR was registered two days ago.
“Our activists Jainam Chedda and Bhavika Shamji Anjara reported the case to the police, and also retrieved the CCTV footage showing how the rashly driven truck fatally ran over the dog. The accused driver did not stop or slowed down despite clearly seeing the dog in front of the vehicle. We have therefore lodged the FIR,” said a member of Cheersfurever Foundation.
The honorary district animal welfare officer at Palghar, Mitesh Jain, told TOI: “It was very shocking to see in the CCTV video clip how the truck mowed down the poor animal. Even if the truck driver had slowed down a bit, the dog could have escaped death by running towards the roadside. Hence, I have also asked all the senior police officials of this region to trace the accused driver so that he can be arrested soon.”
The officials at Manikpur police station have said that the FIR was registered for rash driving and killing an animal under the Indian Penal Code sections 279 and 429 respectively.
Further inquiry is on to find the accused driver.
